5 Ways You Can Start Preparing for the Holidays Now

It’s hard to believe the holidays are around the corner — but somehow, they always sneak up. Between gifts, gatherings, school concerts, and endless to-do lists, it’s easy to feel more overwhelmed than joyful. This year, instead of waiting for the December rush (or even November), I’m starting early — in small, manageable ways that make the season feel a little lighter (and a lot more peaceful). Here are 5 ways you can start preparing for the holidays now — without the stress, chaos, or last-minute scramble.

1. Start Your Gift List Early

Before the sales start and the rush kicks in, make a simple list. Write down everyone you usually buy for and a few gift ideas for each person — even if they’re just notes for now.

Bonus tip: Create a note on your phone labeled “Gift Ideas” so you can add to it as inspiration strikes. No more blank-staring at your cart mid-December.

2. Declutter Before the Decorations

Before you start pulling out the bins of decor, do a quick sweep of your main spaces. Donate toys, outgrown clothes, and anything you don’t want to store for another year.
You’ll thank yourself when it’s time to decorate — and everything feels fresh instead of crowded.

3. Plan Your Calendar (and Protect Your Time)

Holiday burnout often comes from saying yes to everything. Start penciling in the events that matter most — and leave some blank space.
Mark down family traditions you love, and give yourself permission to skip the ones that drain you. A slow, cozy December > a chaotic one.

4. Stock Up on Staples

From baking supplies to wrapping paper, grab a few things each week so you’re not panic-buying butter or tape the night before.
If you’re feeling extra prepared, start a small holiday “stash” box with things like gift tags, candles, and spare hostess gifts.

5. Decide on Your Christmas Card Idea

Whether it is a family picture, kid shot or anything else unique to you, this is the time to figured out what you want to do. October is a great time to take those family pictures so that you can order in November and then have them in-hand for end of November/ early December to mail out. Don't rush the stuff that will be memories for a lifetime.

The holidays don’t have to feel like a marathon. A few small steps now — a list here, a clean shelf there — can make a big difference when the season truly begins.

So grab a glass of wine, make a list (or two), and give yourself the gift of a calmer, cozier holiday season. You deserve that.
